Embracing Impermanence
2021
Bachelor of Fine Arts Final Exhibition at the Scarfone Hartley Gallery in Tampa, Florida.
When I was a child, the playground that I frequented was massive. Back then, traveling the distance between the swings and the slide was a long, exhausting journey, but now it’s merely a few, easy steps.
Our world, all the things within our world, and our collective and individual perspectives of our world are constantly changing. Nothing is permanent within our lives. Time is an endless progression, and even our memories fade.
My series begins with this short phrase: “Well, I bought a ladder.” Embracing Impermanence is a series of digital black and white images of daily life captured while utilizing a three-and-a-half-foot ladder. Through these images, I choose to embrace the impermanent nature of our everyday lives and grasp it. The new height brings me into the present moment and the ladder acts as a device to propel me from one moment of thought to the next. These images are my physical memories, time capsules of my life, that I share with you from a new perspective with every release of the shutter.
Now, I challenge you to become aware of the present. Take my photographs in hand, acknowledge their impermanence, and then place them back in my display as desired. Use the moment to become fully aware and change your perspective to that of a creator, artist, designer, friend, and viewer. Enjoy the time spent viewing my exhibition because it will soon fade as time barrels forward.
Medium: Archival Inkjet prints on magnetic sheeting. (total of 48 pieces)
Label Information:
Attention viewer: Please feel free to hold and rearrange the photographs within this display as desired. Take your time designing, be creative, and be kind to other viewers. Simple Things
2020-
Sometimes simple everyday objects are the most beautiful things. The organization of a stack of cardboard or the bottom part of a broom are often overlooked. However, the close observation of simplistic objects or everyday occurrences are some of the most beautiful. Simple Things is an ongoing series of black and white digital images that include people, objects, animals, scenery and anything else that are a part of my everyday life as a student living in Tampa, Florida. This documentation series is meant to challenge viewers' perspectives. A jar of peanuts in a grocery store will become a beautiful object if the viewer takes only a moment to change their perspective. My hope for this series, Simple Things, is that viewers will change their perspective of things surrounding them everyday and recognize the immense beauty that surrounds them.
